Semiotics Preliminary Exercise 3
Charles Pierce's Theory of Semiotics
Charles Pierce was an American philosopher who developed a crucial part of the theory of semiotics. A sign is something that is referring to something, i.e. the color green could be a sign for money. Pierce's theory was based on 3 main types of signs: iconic signs, symbolic signs, and indexical signs. Iconic signs share a direct physical representation with the thing they stand for. Symbolic signs share no physical representation with the thing they stand for. Indexical signs are caused by the things they stand for. I made a table of sorts to help understand what the different types of signs are and how they can be used.
